They all need to be done all the time. Web Site Design, Coding, and Maintenance I make multiple daily updates to the library’s Web site, using HTML, CSS, CFM, and JavaScript. I do all of my coding by hand in Notepad; I don’t use WYSIWYG programs like Dreamweaver, as I find they actually slow me down. I also do a good deal of graphics work for the Web site, primarily working with Paint Shop Pro and Fireworks. In addition to the regular parts of our library’s Web site (pages with graphic and text elements, hyperlinked booklists, online forms), I am also Webmistress for the California Room Digital Archive, an online repository/exhibit of local history materials.

When reading Entertainment Weekly on my own time, I make notes of any movie sequels or remakes in the works, check whether we own the originals on DVD, then alert our DVD selector before the demand picks up. I also troubleshoot, mostly tracking down missing items. I have developed a knack for guessing how items might be misshelved or where they might be tucked away in the staff areas. Although I am not enough of a perfectionist to be a cataloger, I am so good at spotting typos in the catalog that our catalogers joke about my eagle eye.

However, most of these issues are dealt with locally. Having a firm commitment to intellectual freedom and being able to effectively communicate that position is one way that you will have a very real impact on children’s services in your library. Collection policies, statements of intellectual freedom, procedures for dealing with challenged material, and the support of your library administration are all vital elements to have in place.
